Concrete Canvas

I was delighted to take part in Concrete Canvas, Chelmsford’s street art festival, again this year alongside local and internationally renowned artists. I was invited to paint a CCTV base and given a loose brief to include safety and nature in my piece. The base has a rectangular panel on one side which I thought might disrupt the flow of a design, so I decided to make a feature of it and paint it with an LGBTQ+ flag. Next I painted various queer people sitting on or interacting with giant mushrooms, which are all linked via networks of roots, to show how safety comes from connected communities.

This project was a great opportunity for me to explore a new colour palette, work at a large scale and engage with my local community about the joys of public art. I was thrilled to hear such positive responses whilst I was painting and hope it brings a smile to people as they walk along the river - you can find my work on Victoria Road by Riverside Leisure Centre, Chelmsford.
